DocuWorkz is a web-based electronic signature platform built as a simpler, more affordable alternative to DocuSign and Adobe Sign. It is operated by Volans LLC and designed for businesses, freelancers, and teams that need to collect legally binding signatures without enterprise pricing or unnecessary complexity.

## What DocuWorkz does

- **Upload a PDF** — drop in any document; it renders instantly in the browser using PDF.js
- **Place fields by clicking** — add signature, initials, date, name, email, text, number, and checkbox fields anywhere on any page
- **Add recipients** — assign fields to specific signers with roles (signer, approver, viewer, CC), optional signing order, and optional OTP identity verification
- **Send for signature** — recipients receive an email with a unique signing link; no account required to sign
- **Track in real time** — per-recipient status (pending, viewed, signed), signing timestamps, IP addresses, and a humanized activity timeline
- **Tamper-evident audit chain** — every action is locked into a SHA-256 hash chain; any modification is detectable
- **Signed PDF download** — completed documents include embedded signature IDs and an Envelope ID footer stamped on every page
- **Automatic reminders** — configurable reminder schedules; unsigned recipients are nudged automatically
- **Expiration** — documents can have a deadline; expired documents cannot be signed and are flagged automatically
- **Templates** — build reusable templates with pre-placed fields and role assignments
- **Team management** — invite team members, assign roles (admin, sender), revoke access
- **Manual reminders** — senders can trigger an immediate reminder nudge, subject to a configurable cooldown window

## Key concepts

- **Envelope** — a document prepared for signing, with fields and recipients assigned
- **Envelope ID** — a unique DocuSign-style identifier stamped on every signed PDF page
- **Signature ID** — a unique identifier rendered under each signature on the signed PDF
- **Signing order** — recipients sign in sequence; the next signer is unlocked only after the previous one completes
- **OTP verification** — optional email or SMS one-time password gate before a recipient can view or sign
- **Audit chain** — a sequential SHA-256 hash chain covering every document event (sent, viewed, signed, expired, reminded, completed)
- **Recipient roles** — signer (must sign), approver (must approve), viewer (read-only), CC (notified only)

- Senders authenticate via Clerk (Google OAuth or email/password)
- Signers access documents via a unique token URL — no DocuWorkz account required
